Low Cost Video Conferencing: Looking at Oovoo and Skype

Sloan-C Emerging Technologies Symposium presentation by Kirk Sundling entitled Low Cost Video Conferencing: Looking at Oovoo and Skype. About 40 in attendance.  A descent presentation. Main points include:
  • Uses of Skype
    • Student hundreds of miles away were able to participate in a face-to-face class
    • Invited textbook authors in to join in a class
    • Audio share, video share, desktop share
  • Warning when using Skype/Oovoo
    • Video conferencing (VC) without training/knowledge is dangerous/frustrationg
    • Anxiety is high during a VC
    • Consult with IT
    • Test, test test
    • Can be a gamble
    • May not scale
    • Echo is common but solvable problem
    • Jitter, latency, packet loss are common problems
    • Skype/Oovoo don't use H.323 standard, so can't talk with one another nor other VC technologies
  • Cool cable to connect PolyCom systems to a PC (perhaps to record phone conferences of weekly departmental meetings?)  Found this through the power of real-time networking via Twitter!  Presenter didn't know where to find the cable, I posed the question to Twitter, and got my response.  Thanks jjjohnson01!
