Authentic Assessments for Sharpening Students’ Creative and Innovative Skills with Web 2.0 Tools

Sloan-C Emerging Technologies Symposium presentation by Diana Dilberman of Baltimore City Community College entitled Authentic Assessments for Sharpening Students’ Creative and Innovative Skills with Web 2.0 Tools. About 32 in attendance.  A descent presentation. Main points include:
  • Began with a review of what authentic assessment is.
    • A real-life situation.
    • The application of knowledge rather than the regurgitation of it.
  • Should be:
    • Cross-discipline
      • "Kids also must learn to think across disciplines, since that's where most new breakthroughs are made."  Thomas Friedman, The World is Flat.
      • That's more life-like and thus makes stronger learning.
    • Use multiple forms of media (MI)
      • Point is to let the students use the medium most aligned to their learning style.
      • Allows students to be active learners.
    •  A fairly lengthy interlude of a politically-charged 60's song.  Odd...
      • Assuming the role of the student, we were to write an additional stanza to the song, maintaining the theme of the original song but applying it to a more modern event.
      • Would accompany an essay to further report on our understanding of the historical event.
      • Record and upload the final stanza to YouTube.
      • In-session group work ensued.
Also just found the Twitter search hash tag (they had run out of handouts with the tag on it when I registered).
